COD Mobile Hits 1 Billion Downloads

A Billion Reasons Why COD Mobile is a Gaming Phenomenon

COD Mobile has reached an impressive milestone, as Activision announced today that the first-person shooter has exceeded 1 billion total downloads worldwide. Since its launch on October 1, 2019, it has maintained its status as one of the top shooting games on both the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store.

However, reaching the 1 billion downloads milestone doesn’t necessarily mean there are that many active players. It simply reflects how often the game has been downloaded across different accounts.  The game became a sensation right after its release in October 2019, thanks to several key factors.

One major reason was the lack of strong FPS games at that time. While titles like Critical Ops and Guns of Boom were available, they either didn’t have significant marketing or were bogged down by excessive microtransactions. Additionally, COD Mobile featured beloved maps and game modes such as Nuketown and Hijacked, drawing in many former fans of the Call of Duty franchise eager to try the mobile version.

Out of the blue oceans of games on all the platforms as of today, a handful have been able to achieve this milestone. Some of the others which have done so are as follows:

  • Subway Surfers
  • Candy Crush Saga
  • Free Fire
  • Hill Climb Racing
  • Ludo King
  • Roblox

Another contributing factor was the inclusion of both multiplayer and battle royale modes. When it launched in 2019, battle royale games were incredibly popular, with Free Fire, PUBG Mobile, and Rules of Survival leading the charts. To capitalize on this trend, the game introduced an exciting battle royale mode, which continues to be a favorite among many players.

Lastly, the game benefits from monthly seasons that bring content updates. Since its debut, Activision has rolled out a new season each month, featuring updates that introduce fresh content like maps, modes, and weapons. Each season also comes with a new battle pass, ensuring players have a steady flow of content and objectives to engage with.  COD Mobile will celebrate its 5th anniversary in Season 10, which is set to begin on November 6.
