Riot Games has kickstarted their official Wild Rift Esports tournaments for the Southeast Asian regions by partnering with several regional partners to host local tournaments. One of those regional partners is Mineski for the Philippines and it has announced a detailed plan to host a Wild Rift tournament under the Philippines Pro Gaming League(PPGL). This announcement introduced a unique points system with a total prize pool of 10M Philippines Peso[~$208,000] and a two seasonal event format.
LOL Esports initially announced their plans to build a sustainable esports ecosystem for their new mobile title LOL: Wild Rift and this move is their first step in fulfilling that promise. In an article, Riot Games Southeast Asia Esports announced Wild Rift SEA Icon Series Preseason for seven countries with regional hosts for each country. Currently, each tournament will be held individually and other details will be announced in the upcoming days.
Wild Rift PPGL Tournament Details:
Mineski soon revealed a detailed structure that includes a two seasonal format with open qualifiers and a unique point system that offers one peso for each point earned. In this system, a total of 5 million points could be earned per season, making the total prize pool of 10M Philippines peso or 200K USD.
This tournament is broken into four groups and each one has its own group stage. In these four regions, different numbers of matches will be played between qualified teams as given above and points will be distributed accordingly. Once the teams gain enough points, they will head to Playoffs. The entire calendar overview for each region is given below:
A total of four regions are present namely North Luzon, South Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Each group will have two seasons of Summer and Fall Split. The first season will begin in March 2021 and Fall Split will start in July. Each season will have a group, playoffs, and a finals stage.
At the end of this tournament, the winner will be crowned with Summer Super Cup and Fall Super Cup. The prize pool distribution is not mentioned for now and whether these winning teams will be qualifying for any global event or not is yet to be revealed.
This tournament is a big boost for Wild Rift Esports and especially for a region like SEA where mobile esports is thriving very well, such local events will shape a pathway for Riot Games to implement even bigger and better tournaments in the future.
