Among us has leapfrogged PUBG Mobile to be the most downloaded game on the Appstore and Google playstore in the 3rd Quarter of 2020.
The meteoric rise of the social deduction game was marked by the rise of online gaming during the pandemic and the ban of PUBG Mobile in India. Having seen a combined 84 million downloads, the game has spiralled into one of the most popular games of this year.
Interestingly, the game has been released in 2018, and with low traction for a couple of years, the publishers had decided to make another version of it called Among Us 2. However, the overwhelmingly positive reviews and popularity has had them pivot to making the existing game better.
One of the reasons why the game has been so famous is that it is very easy to learn, and can be played with a large group of friends. The trick of the trade is that of persuading the others to believe in your story, while also completing tasks or killing people depending on which role you assume. It is glaringly similar to the popular social game called Mafia.
The rise of Among Us has led popular streamers like PewDiePie and Pokimane join the bandwagon as it continues to be the number one streamed game on Twitch, adding scores of new streamers and viewers everyday. While the hype is not going to die down anytime soon, it will be interesting to see what the devs do next to prevent it from being just another fad.
