Among Us is a global phenomenon that received its popularity a couple of years after its launch. While the Twitch streamers made this game popular and well known for their viewers, gamers around the world quickly picked up the trend and started enjoying Among Us with their own group of friends.
Among Us is available on Android, iOS, and on PC via Steam but the biggest question is, can console players also enjoy this game? The answer is ‘No’ for now but the future of this game is bright for the console platforms. The game developers have reportedly been working on launching an Xbox and PlayStation versions in the near future but there is a lot of work necessary for making it happen.
Challenges posed for Among Us on console
Among us is a game heavily based on communication and the game custom lobby system. While the game is enjoyable with random matchmaking, the experience is completely changed when players enter a private lobby and connect via voice chat to enjoy the game. This is the biggest challenge that the developers need to tackle while building a console version.
Any console game has its own voice chat feature for various multiplayer titles. There is no possibility of employing a third party or external application completely dedicated to voice chat. PC players mostly use discord for communication and a similar trend is seen in the mobile gamers but the same thing cannot be done on a PS4 or Xbox One.
Another big issue is to build a custom lobby or a friend list feature through which the players can add each other to private lobbies. The lack of communication also affects here as players cannot share the lobby codes and while some may communicate via calls to tackle it, the solution is not ideal in the long run.
Also, implementing a friend list interface requires the game to create a unique ID for each player but it is very hard to do. As the game is available across cross-platform, making the unique ID for each player is practically impossible considering the amount of total userbase.
The emergency meetings also play a vital role in Among Us. While conventional typing is simple in PC and Mobiles, its very hard to type faster messages on the consoles. All of these issues pose a challenge for the developers to make Among Us available on consoles.
Conclusion:
From this above discussion, it is clear that the game has way too many hurdles before a stable and working console version will be out in the market. The game developers are rumored to have to work on a console version but no confirmation is available for now. The console enthusiasts will have to wait for a while to play Among Us on their Xbox and PlayStations.
