It can’t be denied that the COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc across the esports scenes of most multiplayer video games, but fighting games seem to have been one of the worst victims of the situation.
Unlike other esports titles, the esports scene revolving around fighting games is primarily based on offline tournaments, with tournaments regularly being held across the world pitting professional players against each other in tests of sheer skill.
In what comes as a series of disappointing news for fans of the genre, Capcom has announced the cancellation of Capcom Cup 2020 after it was initially postponed to February 19th.
In its place, Capcom will organize an online season finale for Capcom Pro Tour on February 20th and 21st in attempts to “highlight the best players of the season.”
Fans aren’t too happy regarding Capcom’s decision, with many of them claiming that Street Fighter 5 isn’t “playable” online due to ping issues and other variables that could otherwise be eliminated by holding the tournament offline.
A portion of the fans have also shown support to Capcom’s decision to cancel an offline event during this time of the pandemic, which is understandable, since there would have been a possibility of fans contracting the disease when visiting the venue.
