CD Projekt Red Responds to Controversy Over Anti-Russian Content in Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty

CD Projekt Red recently found itself embroiled in controversy due to the presence of anti-Russian comments in the Ukrainian localization of Cyberpunk 2077’s Update 2.0. This has led to a formal apology from the developer and a commitment to rectify the situation promptly.

The Ukrainian version of Cyberpunk 2077’s Update 2.0 included alterations that were perceived as derogatory towards Russians, referencing the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. CD Projekt Red was quick to clarify that these additions were not intentional and did not reflect the views of the developer, emphasizing that the offensive remarks did not originate from anyone at the company.

Developer’s Response and Rectification

CD Projekt Red has expressed its apologies for the unintended offenses and is working diligently to replace the offensive remarks in the upcoming update. The developer stated, “We apologize for this situation and are taking steps to ensure it does not happen again,” highlighting its commitment to maintaining a respectful and inclusive gaming environment.

While the developer has clarified that the offensive remarks were unintended, it has openly supported Ukraine, donating approximately £181,000 to Polska Akcja Humanitarna, a humanitarian organization in Poland. This donation underscores CD Projekt Red’s stance on the ongoing conflict and its support for humanitarian causes.
