GamerLegion Challenges Valve Ranking System Over Prize Money Discrepancy

GamerLegion has formally contacted Valve regarding a discrepancy in the February Valve ranking update, according to a HLTV report. The issue revolves around how prize money is calculated, specifically concerning the minimum guaranteed prize pool for teams still competing in a tournament.

The problem, as GamerLegion sees it, is that teams knocked out early received ranking points based on their winnings, while teams still in the tournament—and thus yet to receive their full prize—missed out on potential VRS points at the ranking cutoff date.

This timing proved crucial for GamerLegion. On February 3rd, the cutoff for BLAST Open Lisbon, PGL Bucharest, YaLLa Compass Qatar, IEM Melbourne, and IEM Dallas invites, they were ranked 13th. They narrowly missed the top 12, the threshold for BLAST Open Lisbon and PGL Bucharest invites, by a mere 0.4 points, assuming no invited teams decline.

Following their elimination from IEM Katowice on February 4th, and after securing their $38,000 prize, along with the ranking adjustments from their win against Astralis and losses to Spirit and The MongolZ, GamerLegion climbed to 11th in HLTV’s live calculation of Valve’s formula. This placed them 43 points ahead of FURIA, who held 12th place and whose $10,000 winnings from Katowice were already factored into the February 3rd rankings.

GamerLegion argues that this discrepancy significantly affected their ranking and eligibility for recent invites. They believe they rightfully deserve a spot in the top 12 of the global VRS.
