How the PS4 Helped AMD Escape Bankruptcy

How Sony's PlayStation Became AMD's Saving Grace

Renato Fragale, Senior Director of OEM Consumer & Gaming Client Business at AMD, revealed on his LinkedIn profile that the work the company did on Sony’s PlayStation 4 saved AMD from going bankrupt.

The symbiotic relationships in the tech industry are often overlooked and AMD getting saved by Sony is a testament to that. AMD goes toe to toe with companies like NVIDIA and Intel and has leveled the playing field in terms of market cap. During the release of PS4, AMD’s products were doing as good as they are today given they were considered inferior to that of Intel and Nvidia for CPU and GPU respectively.

Sony released the PS4 back in 2013 and it was their most economically successful product only succeeded by PS5 almost a decade later. The GPU of the legendary console was developed by AMD and as the OEM, the monumental success of PS5 translated to massive economic gains for the American semiconductor company.

“Managed 15-person product development team for Sony PlayStation 4 (PS4) that has sold over 91Mu to date.

“Viewed as one of the most successful launches in AMD history helping AMD to avoid bankruptcy.” wrote Fragale on LinkedIn.

It has been a decade since the launch of PS4 and AMD isn’t the company that they were back in 2013. In the past 11 years, they have managed to release a new line of CPUs and GPUs that took the company to greater heights. The company has branched out to improve their chips for gaming as well as productivity which put an end to the dominance of NVIDIA and Intel.

AMD’s relationship with Sony was extended after the success of PS4 as the next generation of PS, i.e. PS5 is also using hardware sourced from AMD and the generational improvement in performance is quite noticeable. PS5 is now the most successful console by Sony so it would be fair to assume that AMD has doubled down on their profits thanks to Sony.
