DreamHack alongside European Tour launches Golf’s first esports tournament

DreamHack alongside European Tour and game developers Topgolf Entertainment Group have announced the launch of the European eTour. This tournament marks golf’s first esports based series.

The event is of seasonal nature and will include six contests set to be held at the European Tour tournaments all around the world. The series makes its debut in Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in January, 2020. The game of choice for the esports series is none other than the leading golf based mobile game World Golf Tour (WGT) by Topgolf with a massive playerbase of an estimated 20 million players.

Online qualifiers will allow the best of the best players to have a chance at making it to the onsite event for one of the each scheduled contests. Eight players from the qualifiers will then battle it out at the European Tour onsite event. Finally, five of the tournament winners alongside three wild card qualifier entries will go head on against each other in the season-finale at the European Tour season-ending DP World Tour Championship, Dubai at Jumeirah Golf Estates during 19th November to 22nd November, 2020.

According to the European Tour, the launch of the series is due to the successful feedback they had received from the fans during the inaugural European eTour Championship held earlier this year in Denmark. Rufus Hack, the European Tour’s Chief Content Officer, said: “The launch of the European eTour underlines the European Tour’s commitment to innovation and we believe this is an exciting opportunity for us to be leaders in a market that has huge growth potential. The esports industry allows the European Tour to engage with our existing audience in a different way and attract new fans outside of our traditional demographic through our broadcast and digital platforms. Our inaugural event in Denmark earlier this year gave a glimpse into the popularity of esports and we are looking forward to launching the golf’s first esports Tour in 2020.”

DreamHack as per the partnership will provide world class streaming of all the six esport events of the European eTour series for the fans across multiple platforms including broadcast, digital and social media platforms.
