Epic Game’s battle against giants Apple and Google has gone international, as the company has raised complaints against both to the UK’s Competition Appeal Tribunal (CTA), claiming that the two had violated the UK competition laws.
Apple and Google, on the other hand, have claimed that Epic Games has attempted to bypass their payment systems, thus breaking their ToS.
The dispute between the companies dates back to August 2020. To circumvent the 30% commission to Google and Apple for in-app transactions, Epic Games added a payment system of a separate virtual currency that players could buy directly from their website. Both Apple and Google retaliated by removing the Epic Games app from their app stores.
In their complaint, Epic Games accuses Apple and Google of abusing their dominance over their OS installed in smartphones. They have demanded Google prevent pre-installing Google Play on all Android devices in the UK, while the Apple complaint demands the removal of the restriction of downloading Epic Games Store to Apple devices in the UK.
We’ll have to wait till 21st January to find out what comes out of this complaint when it will be put forward to the CTA for their decision.
