GOG warns Cyberpunk 2077 players of potential save data corrupting bug

It seems a new bug in Cyberpunk 2077 is causing save files to bloat in size if players craft too many items and which will corrupt files over 8MB in size.

According to a new report, if players store or craft too many items the save file for Cyberpunk 2077 gets bloated with too much information which in-turn causes the size of the “save file” to exceed the hard limit of 8MB. The game engine is unable to read and write on files exceeding the 8MB limit which causes the saves to corrupt and become unusable.

The bug was reported by players who mainly focused extensively on the game’s crafting mechanic and hoarding stuff. Whenever the player craft or loot an item, the game assigns an ID to the item and record each crafted or looted items in the save file. Even after a player gets rids of some items, the record remains in save which in-turn fills the save file with useless information that is no longer needed.

After several players reported facing a similar issue, CD Projekt Red responded and advised players that they should “try to keep a lower amount of items and crafting materials” as a temporary fix, essentially asking them not to use the crafting mechanic extensively and depend more on looting and upgrading items.

Unfortunately the save is damaged and can’t be recovered. Please use an older save file to continue playing and try to keep a lower amount of items and crafting materials. If you used the item duplication glitch, please load a save file not affected by it. The save file size limit might be increased in one of the future patches, but the corrupted files will remain that way.

The developer further assured that a more permanent solution is in work and in one-of-the future patches “the save file size limit might be increased”.

This issue isn’t new for CDPR  games, previously in The Witcher 3 players also faced a similar issue after they crafted too many items. It seems like a game engine limitation that might take some time to fix properly. Until the issue is fixed, the best advice currently is not to craft too many items, consume any extra material, keep inventory clean, and definitely not to use any item duplication glitch or unlimited money exploits.
