India leads world in game downloads with PUBG Mobile relaunch on the horizon

India is the leading market in terms of game applications downloads in 2020, as per the latest data.

India is widely considered as one of the hottest markets for the esports industry. The numbers back it as well, with recent statistics revealing that India accounted for more game downloads in 2020 than any other country in the world.

Breakthrough games like Among Us, PUBG Mobile and Pokemon GO all saw record number of downloads, with the highest share coming from the Indian region.

Innersloth’s Among Us had breezed past every other game to be the most downloaded game in October, 2020. 15% of the total came from India, with USA close behind in second with 12% of the total downloads, according to the data from Sensor Tower.

Garena FreeFire, a game that was one of the direct competitors to PUBG Mobile and has a huge user base in India, was the most downloaded game of 2020 in the first nine months, owing mostly to the Indian ban on the latter game.

Talking about PUBG Mobile, the game is set to return to Indian markets soon and it will surely pump up the numbers further in favour of the region.

Overall, as per Sensor Tower’s data, India accounted for 17% of the total market downloads as far as game applications are concerned, with USA at 10% and Brazil close behind with 8%.

The numbers do run parallel with the growing stature of the Indian region within the gaming industry and it will be intriguing to see how this data alters the view of the gaming industry towards India, if at all.
