League of Legends Championships to be broadcast on the BBC

This summer the BBC will be broadcasting live League of Legends action from the UK League Championship and Northern League of Legends Championship. The UK League Championship (UKLC) will start on Sunday, June 14 and the Northern League of Legends (NLC) on Tuesday, June 16, with games available to watch on BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport online and app.

For eight weeks on the BBC, eight teams will compete in the UKLC qualifiers every Sunday and Monday evening (6.00pm-10.00pm) from June 14 until July 27, building up to the semi-finals and Grand Finals on August 2 and 3 where one team will be crowned UKLC Champions. Additionally, the top two teams will also advance to compete in the Northern League of Legends Championship (NLC).

Bulldog Esports and London Esports recently secured their spots in the UKLC after impressive performances in the qualifiers and will join invited teams Barrage Esports Academy, Demise, Enclave Gaming, MnM Gaming Academy, NVision Esports and Munster Rugby Gaming Academy as they all battle it out and make a push for victory towards the Grand Finals on Monday, August 3.

From Tuesday, June 16, 12 of the best teams in Northern Europe will go head-to-head every Tuesday and Wednesday (6.00pm-9.00pm) in the NLC, including British sides Fnatic Rising, BT Excel, Barrage Esports and MnM Gaming, as they aim to make the play-offs on August 4 – 8.

BBC has been regularly featuring esport stars in their shows on mainstream media.

Online battle arena game, League of Legends, attracts more than 100 million worldwide active players each month and has played a big part in the development of esports, making it one of the most popular team games on the planet. League of Legends follows on from the success of live broadcasting esports competitions Rocket League European Spring Series, ePremier League Invitational, Formula E Race At Home Challenge, W Series Esports League and Digital Swiss 5 across the BBC.

Ben Gallop, BBC Sport Head of Digital, said: “When it comes to esports, it doesn’t come much bigger than League of Legends and we’re very excited to see all teams in action throughout this summer period. Along with all the live sport that is about to resume on the BBC soon, this coverage over the coming weeks shows our ongoing commitment to esports.”

UK League Championship 2020 Summer Split will be available to watch from Sunday, June 14 and Monday, June 15 (6.00pm) on BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport online and app. Qualifying rounds will continue every Sunday and Monday until July 27. Semi-finals and Grand Finals will take place on Sunday, August 2 and Monday, August 3.
