China’s League of Legends pro series suspended due to coronavirus

The LPL has delayed matches “until we can ensure the safety and health of our players and fans.”

China’s League of Legends Pro League’s week 2 of Spring-Split matches were called off due to the outbreak of deadly Coronavirus and state of emergency in China. Fearing the safety of players and staff Riot suspended the League until the situation gets under control.

The spread of deadly Coronavirus started from the city of Wuhan, China and since then has spread across more than 16 cities. Although the majority of matches were scheduled to take place in Beijing where no cases of the virus were reported, Riot still decided to take precautionary measures ahead of their second week of the 2020 spring split and called off the matches for an indefinite period until the situation improves.

Speaking with fans on Twitter, China’s LPL said:

We have decided to postpone week 2 of the LPL until we can ensure the safety and health of our players and fans. To our fans, we sincerely apologize that it has come to this and we will share any and all info as soon as we can.

Currently, information about the Coronavirus is limited and the extent of its threat is unknown, so the LPL might be postponed for weeks or maybe for the whole spring season (3-months). The delays might affect the participation of the region at major international events such as Mid-Season Invitationals which is scheduled to go live after the Spring-Split.

The spread of Coronavirus is still at large and as such many other gaming leagues and events might also be called off or postponed. Stay tuned for more information as the situation is still unfolding.
