Microsoft’s Gaming Chief, Phil Spencer, confirmed that the company is indeed working on a handheld gaming device but said that it is still just in the early stages, and to expect it more years down the line.
In his recent interview with Bloomberg, Spencer made some hints towards the serious plan of Microsoft to enter the handheld market for gaming. He confirmed that the company is developing prototypes in all forms and is now testing them with the hope of bringing out a fully harmonized handheld device, which would go together with the latest market trends as well as user preferences.
In the meantime, Microsoft is also fixing several issues pertaining to how the Xbox app should work on existing hand-held gaming devices. According to Spencer, he feels excited about the hardware development and innovation within the team.
It was just a few months ago that at the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase, Spencer let the cat out of the bag when discussing future plans from Microsoft regarding handheld devices. One such specific point he made particularly important would be local gaming functionality on any potential Xbox handheld that would likely make for more than cloud streaming.
