PS5’s April Update now lets you use external storage options

PlayStation 5’s first major update will launch globally on April 14 and brings support for external USB storage to install PS5 games, cross-gen Share Play between PlayStation 4 and 5 as well as new features for the PlayStation App for mobile devices.

While it is now possible to store games on external storage, you cannot access them. With this update, you can seamlessly transfer and play your games from a USB storage device. Sony says that “it’s a great way to extend the storage capabilities of your PS5 console, and you can seamlessly copy your PS5 games back to the console’s internal storage when you’re ready to play.” However, PS5 games cannot be directly downloaded to the USB storage either, but games that have been transferred to it will be updated automatically and you can select what component or game mode (Story Campaign or Multiplayer) you’d like to transfer/install. Sony is still working on enabling the M.2 storage expansion slot in the future which would let players download more games like the PS5’s 825GB SSD only lets you access 667GB worth of storage.

The PlayStation blog post also mentions “New Social Features” for PlayStation 4 and 5 with the inclusion of Cross-Generation Share Play where PS5 users can let their friends on PS4 control and watch their game thanks to various options that include “the ability to share your screen with a friend, pass your controller virtually to a friend, or pass a second controller virtually to play co-op games together.” Friends can also request to join your current game session (depending on the game) from the “Request to Join” option.

Finally, the update also brings several QoL features such as:

  • Improved Game Base
  • Disable Game Chat or Adjust Players’ Volume
  • Game Update Pre-Downloads
  • Customize Game Library
  • Screen Zoom
  • New Trophy Settings and Stats Screen

The PlayStation mobile app is also being updated, notably with features that make it easier for you to join a multiplayer session from the app itself as well as storage management for the PS5.
