Amidst all the supply issues with Sony’s latest and greatest console in PlayStation 5, they managed to sell over 4.5 million pieces of it in 2020 alone according to their Q3 financial report.
Despite the complications involved in the demand and supply of the PlayStation 5, Sony was able to have its best quarter. The coronavirus alone managed to put a stop at the supply chain to several retailers across the world but that did not stop Sony from racking incredible numbers when it comes to sales.
The PlayStation 5 had similar hype building up to the launch as the PlayStation 4, but the latter did not meet the hardship that the pandemic that managed to spread discord through the ranks of Sony, yet it wasn’t enough to keep them from having one of their best fiscal quarters.
Daniel Ahmad, a Senior Analyst at Niko Partners said “Sony’s Game & Network Services Segment reported Q3 (Oct-Dec) revenues of 883.2 billion yen ($8.43 billion), up 40% YoY. Operating Income for the quarter was 80.2 billion yen ($767 million), up 50% YoY.”. He added that the PS5 launch along with “strong software and network sales” contributed to the majority of their profits that earned them their best quarter in the history of their gaming division.
The PlayStation 5 brought unprecedented hype but not everyone was fortunate to grab one on the first day of the release due to the shortage of supply. Though this problem started to vanish gradually, there is no denying the fact that it was there, but props to Sony for handling it pragmatically.
