Sony has taken a significant leap by introducing its latest PlayStation 5 model, which boasts a unique feature: a removable disc drive. This innovative design not only offers flexibility to gamers but also marks a shift in how gaming consoles might be perceived in the future.
The new PS5 model, often dubbed the PS5 “Slim,” is not just about its reduced size. It’s about the fusion of design and functionality. This model is not only slimmer but also shorter than its predecessor. What sets it apart is its ability to replace both the standard PS5 and the PS5 Digital Edition. The design includes a distinct bulge on the side for the disc drive, which can be conveniently removed and replaced with a side panel. This feature allows users to switch between a digital-only version and one with a disc drive, catering to a broader audience and their varied preferences.
Tech Specs and Design Highlights
Sony’s commitment to enhancing user experience is evident in the technical upgrades. The new PS5 has managed to reduce its volume by over 30% and its weight by up to 24%, depending on the chosen model. Sid Shuman, the senior director of SIE content communications, highlighted the design’s intricacies in a recent blog post. He mentioned the four separate cover panels, with the top exuding a glossy finish while the bottom retains a matte look.
For those who opt for the base PS5 Digital Edition, there’s an option to add the Blu-ray disc drive later, as Sony offers it as a separate purchase. Additionally, the new model features two slits on each side and dual USB-C ports at the front, replacing the single USB-C and USB-A ports of the current PS5.
Pricing and Availability
The new PS5 model is set to hit the US market in November, with a price tag of $449.99 for the Digital Edition and $499.99 for the version with a drive. As per Sid Shuman, the global rollout will follow in the subsequent months. Once the inventory of the current PS5 model is exhausted, this new model will be the sole offering. European prices are set at €449.99 for the Digital Edition and €549.99 for the drive. UK gamers can get their hands on it for £479.99 with the drive or £389.99 for the Digital Edition.
