EA Drops Support For Windows 7, 8 On Star Wars, Battlefield Games

Electronic Arts (EA) has officially announced the discontinuation of support for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 operating systems in three of its popular game titles: Battlefield V, Battlefield 1, and Star Wars: Battlefront II (2017). This change is set to take effect on November 30, marking a significant shift for players who are still using older Windows hardware.

EA’s decision to end support for these older operating systems is rooted in its commitment to providing a secure and optimal gaming experience. Microsoft had previously ceased providing security updates and support for Windows 7 in 2020, and for Windows 8 and 8.1 in 2021. Without these critical updates, the integrity and functionality of the games can no longer be guaranteed on these platforms.

While the affected games have been out for several years and are nearing the end of their lifecycles, they still maintain active player communities. This move by EA underscores a broader technological transition in the gaming industry, as support for older operating systems continues to dwindle. Players using the affected operating systems will need to upgrade to a newer version of Windows to continue enjoying these titles.

EA is not alone in phasing out support for older Windows versions. Earlier this year, Epic Games ended support for Windows 7 and 8 in Fortnite, citing similar security concerns. Valve has also announced that Steam will stop supporting Windows 7 and 8 starting January 1, 2024. These changes reflect a broader industry trend toward ensuring security and performance by encouraging users to adopt newer operating systems.
