Recent events have cast a shadow of uncertainty over the gaming community in India as multiple Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have reportedly restricted access to Steam, the popular digital distribution platform by Valve Corporation1. While some users are facing difficulties accessing Steam’s Community and Community Market features, there are reports of a government-based ISP completely blocking the platform.
Initially, it was perceived that the ban was restricted to West Bengal’s Alliance Broadband Pvt. Ltd., but the situation has escalated since, with numerous ISPs joining the blockade. This has led to concerns that the Indian government might be considering a nationwide ban on some or all of Steam’s services.
Several ISPs have already begun to limit access to Steam. According to reports from social media, the ISPs that have blocked the service include Channel 3 Cable Internet (Maharashtra), GTPL (Gujarat), Alliance (West Bengal – though it is currently unblocked), Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL in Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh), and TATA Fiber (Maharashtra)1. The reasons behind these restrictions remain unclear as the ISPs have not provided a clear explanation for their actions.
Interestingly, these developments follow the recent revelation by Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar. On June 14th, he revealed that the government is preparing to ban multiple games, specifically those involving betting, considered harmful to users, or having an addictive factor. Given these criteria, it’s plausible that Steam is being targeted as a part of these proposed regulations.
The potential ban has left the Indian gaming community in a state of unease. Without any official statement from the government, Steam users across India are grappling with their inability to access various features of the platform. A complete ban could lead to significant consequences, as many users stand to lose access to their games, wallet balance, and in-game items.
As the situation unfolds, the gaming community in India can only wait and hope for a favorable resolution. The lack of transparency surrounding the issue is a cause for concern, and a nationwide ban on Steam would undeniably impact the gaming landscape in India. As we wait for official clarification, the question remains: Will a nationwide ban on Steam become a reality? Only time will tell.
