While it’s well-established that Valve is actively working on creating the Steam Deck 2, we’re still nowhere near its final release. In a recent interview at PAX Australia, Valve employees have explained what’s holding them back from developing a successor to their handheld gaming PC.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past couple of years, you’ve probably already heard about the Steam Deck. Launched two years ago, Valve’s handheld device sent shockwaves throughout the tech world, enabling gamers to play modern AAA games on the go with amazing performance.
As per a recent Dexerto report, Valve Hardware Engineer Yazan Aldehayyat and Designer Jay Shaw stated that they have been actively working on Steam Deck 2, but they’ve run into a few hurdles along the way.
“We’re most certainly looking to the future,” Shaw told Dexerto. “Everything we’ve worked on up until now has led to the Steam Deck in the hardware space, and this is continuing to inform a bunch of decisions we’re making going forward.”
As confirmed by the Valve devs, the development of the Steam Deck 2 is being held back by “performance” and won’t be hitting the shelves unless there’s a “generational jump” in that aspect.
“Performance is what defines the Steam Deck 2,” Aldehayyat said in the interview. “We need to have a generational jump in performance before we make it. We’re just waiting on that, is what it comes down to.”
At the time of writing, it’s impossible to predict when fans will finally be able to get their hands on the Steam Deck 2. That said, it’s safe to assume that you’ll have to wait a bit longer to get an update on its potential release date.
