What is cystic fibrosis?
Cystic fibrosis is an inherited disease that affects the mucous and sweat glands in the respiratory, digestive, and reproductive systems from birth. Cystic fibrosis in particular significantly affects the functioning of the lungs, pancreas, liver, intestines, sinuses and genitals.
In people with cystic fibrosis, the mucus in the body thickens and becomes sticky. This causes difficulty breathing and increases the chance of a serious lung infection.
