Pokimane’s Charity Auction Targeted with $500,000 in Fake Bids

A charity auction for a gaming session with Pokimane takes a turn as fraudulent bids made with stolen credit cards surface.

Alright, let’s dive in. Picture this: Twitch’s reigning queen, Pokimane, finds herself at the center of a wild storm. The catch? Some zealous viewers allegedly dipped into stolen credit cards to throw bids north of $500,000. And why, you may ask? Well, to snag a golden ticket to a one-on-one gaming session with Pokimane, of course.

This whirlwind surfaced during the annual charity auction, a brainchild of Twitch streamer and YouTube sensation, CDawgVA, on July 19, 2024. Akin to a Star Wars premiere, CDawgVA’s auction is a calendar event, oftentimes dishing out rare treats for fans to stake their claims on. This year? A sit-down gaming session with Pokimane, a prospect that had the bidding meter cranking into overdrive.

As the bids zipped in, a string of them rocketed to a jaw-dropping half a million dollars. But, the celebration was short-lived. The auction platform, playing Sherlock, flagged and axed these bids, branding them as fraudulent.

Pokimane reacted with a sigh of relief to the news of these faux bids. “So, people did bid. They were actually in the game, but then there were folks who kicked it up a notch, started bidding with stolen credit cards up to half a million dollars,” she shared. “I’m kinda glad they put the brakes on at half a million.”

She also threw light on a chink in the armor, “Apparently, there was a hiccup with the verification where folks could throw their hat in the ring without being properly verified.”

Amidst the maelstrom, Pokimane managed to find her silver lining, particularly the fact that the auction’s proceeds were destined for charity. The highest bid, as it stands, is a cool $30,200.

“I’m just so pumped that it all goes to charity, I’m thrilled to be part of a noble cause and I’m buzzing for the show,” Pokimane beamed.

Meanwhile, CDawgVA, the mastermind behind the charity auction, wore his heart on his sleeve, expressing his disappointment at those behind the fake bids, terming the act as “cringe.”

“It’s super cringe to put up phony money for charity. Nothing sadder you can fake in life than a charity donation. It’s just so sad. Why would someone stoop as low as to commit fraud to puff up a bid at a charity auction?” he wondered aloud.

The proceeds from the annual auction swell the coffers of the Immune Deficiency Foundation, a charity that extends resources, education, and a helping hand to those grappling with primary immunodeficiency. The 2023 edition was a slam dunk, pulling in a hefty $329K for the charity, with an additional $14K earmarked for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Despite this year’s hiccup, optimism is high for a repeat performance.
